Description
Our 18 place Specialist Unit supports children with a primary Cognition and Learning need.
All pupils have an Education, Health & Care Plan.
Admission to the Specialist Unit is via Suffolk LA EHCP consultation processes.
The school have no admission rights and there is no direct access to a Specialist Unit outside of the Suffolk LA consultation process. Having a place within a mainstream school class does not increase the likelihood of being awarded a place within the Specialist Unit.
With higher adult to child ratios, teaching and learning is specialist, with provision carefully designed to meet the unique SEND needs and abilities of the children. Our inclusive and child-centred approach is led by what a child CAN do.
Through a curriculum that is broad and rich in skills needed for life, the development of the whole child is enabled in a supportive and nurturing learning environment. Learning is enhanced through the use of specialist resources and approaches that reflect evidence-based advances in SEND and cognition and learning in particular. Children access a whole curriculum offer in Poplar, with breadth and depth, reflective of their cognitive and learning stage.
Reflecting the specialist training and knowledge of the SU’s Teacher, HLTAs and TAs, a wide range of teaching strategies and skills are employed to provide an individual learning journey with positive outcomes for all.
The Specialist Unit Class Teacher is the first point of contact for families in this class.
