Description

Our 18 place Specialist Unit supports children with SEND Cognition and Learning priority area needs and EHCPs.  With higher adult to child ratios, teaching and learning is specialist, with provision carefully designed to meet the unique SEND needs and abilities of the children.  Our inclusive and child-centred approach is led by what a child CAN do.  Through a curriculum that is broad and rich in skills needed for life, the development of the whole child is enabled in a supportive and nurturing learning environment.  Learning is enhanced through the use of specialist resources and approaches that reflect evidence-based advances in SEND and cognition and learning in particular.  Children access a whole curriculum offer in Poplar, with breadth and depth, reflective of their cognitive and learning stage.  Targeted interventions support pupil-specific needs and include speech and language and Lego Therapy sessions.  Specialist Teachers lead PE, music and art sessions, aimed at developing their creativity and physical abilities.  Reflecting the specialist training and knowledge of the SU’s Teacher, HLTAs and TAs, a wide range of teaching strategies and skills are employed to individualise the learning journey with positive outcomes for all.  While the Class Teacher is the first point of contact for families in this Class, teaching and learning provision is overseen by the school’s Deputy Headteacher of Inclusion and SENDCO, who ensures that statutory processes from the UK Gov SEND Code of Practice (2015) are satisfied across the year.

A Day in Poplar

Children arrive at 9am by a range of modes of transport including car, bike, walking or taxi.  A breakfast club is offered at 8:45.  Following morning registration, children are ready to learn, starting with sensory activities.  There is a structured visual timetable that is consistent and enables children to settle into a routine.  There are opportunities for choice, independence, group work, and challenge for all across the day.  A sensory room provides opportunity for emotional and sensory-regulation in different ways including quiet, reflection and sensory play.  Cognitive and/or active breaks in the outdoor garden area, including the sensory trail, help children to continue to access learning across the day fully.  School dinners or packed lunch are available, with children eating in their classrooms, and supported with the social, physical and life skills needed for eating together.  In line with our whole school inclusive approach, so that all children feel visibly part of our school community, wearing the SET Felix uniform is expected, but with special consideration to sensory needs as agreed.  There are opportunities to attend whole school assemblies and events, and enrichment opportunities, including trips and special focus days in line with the calendar year and British values.  The day ends at 3pm, and families are encouraged to maintain communications with teaching staff through the online DOJO forum.  Photos are uploaded regularly by staff to provide a capture of the wonderful learning of children at school for families.

Description

Our 12 place Specialist Unit supports KS1 children with EHCPs. Children have a variety of needs, most commonly Communication and Interaction, and Cognition and Learning. With higher adult to child ratios, the provision is carefully designed to meet the unique SEND needs and abilities of the children.  Our inclusive and child-centred approach is led by what a child CAN do.  Through a curriculum that is broad and rich in skills needed for life, the development of the whole child is enabled in a supportive and nurturing learning environment that aligns well with the EYFS continuous provision, child-led and play-based approach.  Learning is enhanced through the use of specialist resources and approaches that reflect evidence-based advances in SEND - Communication and Interaction, and Cognition and Learning in particular.  Children access a whole curriculum offer in Elm, with breadth and depth, reflective of their learning stage.  Targeted adult-led interventions take place and focus on specific aspects of need - these include speech and language sessions, turn-taking games, fine motor activities and Lego Therapy. Specialist Teachers lead PE, music and art sessions, aimed at developing their creativity and physical abilities. Reflecting the specialist training and knowledge of the SU’s Teacher, HLTAs and TAs, a wide range of teaching strategies and skills are employed, to individualise the learning journey with positive outcomes for all.

A Day in Elm

Children arrive at 9am and are greeted at the main reception area by the Class Teacher and HLTA. A predictable class routine is shown in the large visual timetable which enables children to settle into their school day.  Phonics, literacy and maths sessions teach key skills with an emphasis on engagement, enjoyment and the development of positive behaviours for learning. Daily TEACCH tray learning enables the children to consolidate their learning with practical activities that also promote independence.  Sensory and active breaks, including mini physical workouts, bubble disco and parachute games, help children to self-regulate throughout the day.  Our secure outdoor garden area is ideal for regular outdoor learning opportunities and exploration.  School dinners or packed lunch are available, with children eating either as a larger group in the kitchen or in smaller supported groups, with the social, physical and life skills needed for eating (together) encouraged. Our afternoons begin with Bucket Time, which follows the motivational Attention Autism approach aimed at engaging children’s attention through a dynamic experience linked to current topics of learning.  In line with our whole school inclusive approach, and so that all children feel part of our school community, children wear the SET Felix uniform, but with special consideration to individual sensory needs as agreed.  There are opportunities to attend whole school assemblies, events and enrichment opportunities, including trips and special focus days in line with the calendar year and British values.  The day ends at 3pm with the Class Teacher and HLTA bringing the children out to meet Parents/Carers or taxis via the main school reception.  Families are encouraged to maintain communications with teaching staff through the online DOJO forum, and photos are uploaded regularly by staff to provide a capture of the wonderful learning of children at school.
